Wedding Dresses

Article Last Updated 17 Apr 2012

You may have sketched your own as a kid, or plucked one out from a magazine. Wedding dresses are always on top of the list when it comes to planning your wedding. There is a perfect dress for whatever time of the year you choose for your all-important wedding day. Here are some great ideas on which types of dresses work best for different seasons.

Winter

Hopeless romantics simply cannot resist the blanket of snow covering everything they see during the winter season, thus the allure and charm of the colder months for weddings. Sheer fabrics and laces just wouldn’t do when planning to walk down a snow-covered aisle, which is why finding luxe fabrics and styles appropriate to the cold weather is important to make sure you are kept warm when you say, ‘I do.’

Don’t limit yourself into coveralls when you can wear sensational accessories over your strapless gowns and slinky sheaths like cashmere wraps, faux fur stoles, and elegant shawls. Sleeved wedding dresses are also back in the scene – just ask Vera Wang and Elizabeth Fillmore. Heavy fabrics are your best bet, so go for sleek silk satins and lace it up with Chantilly or Battenberg laces. When it comes to color and embellishments, opt for elegant detailing on the bodice, or go traditional with pearls and sequins. Hues such as icy blue, bluish pink will help you stand out from the ‘whiteness’ of winter.

Spring

The perfect time of the year for new beginnings, spring is also a good time to shed some layers and show some skin. When tying the knot in this season, look for flowery patterns and accents, and other nature-inspired additions and elements. If you feel flowers are too princessy, go for more preppy patterns and details like ribbon trims, or go for a patterned sash. Light, airy, and sheer fabrics are your best friends during this season, so dial charmeuse, chiffon, silk cottons, or organzas. Spring is also a good time to bare some legs and show off you’re the result of your 3-month wedding-day-diet. Break out from ball gowns and go for sophisticated tea-length or mini dress.

Summer

For a timeless summer wedding look, go for light fabrics simple designs and shorter lengths. Sleeveless is definitely better, as well as v-necks. When it comes to color, shades of blue, white, and bright or sunny tones all work great for a wedding dress, especially if your ceremony will be held outdoors.

Fall

Classy fall weddings call for wedding dresses with delicate embellishments like pleated ruffles, petite bows, and lace appliqués. Pearls, crystals, add glitz to your simple white dress, or you can go for patterned or hand painted fabric for a more unique look. Other fall-worthy colors include cream, soft mushroom or light gray.
